Customer story: Aman Singh, the Senior Staff Software Engineer at Fivetran

Our users consistently inspire us with the diverse ways they leverage our products to tackle challenges across all walks of life and professions. Recently, we talked with Aman Singh, the Senior Staff Software Engineer at Fivetran, and asked him how their company uses CloudBeaver to improve daily operations.

Fivetran is the global leader in data movement. It helps customers use their data to power everything from AI applications and ML models to predictive analytics and operational workloads. The Fivetran platform reliably and securely centralizes data from hundreds of SaaS applications and databases into any destination—whether deployed on-premises, in the cloud, or in a hybrid environment.

Aman shares how CloudBeaver has become an essential tool for Fivetran engineers, enabling them to troubleshoot customer issues seamlessly and securely access diverse data sources without exposing sensitive information. We also discuss his favorite things about CloudBeaver and areas where he sees potential for further app improvements.

Could you please tell us what your work entails? How does CloudBeaver help in your day-to-day tasks?
Our main offering at Fivetran is ELT, and we are focusing mainly on the EL part of the data migration. We sync our customers’ data between their source and target destinations using fully automated data pipelines. To be able to do so, we must support several hundred data sources, including major data warehouses and data lakes

In some cases, our engineers perform troubleshooting on the customer’s side, and for this, they need to log in to the system and connect to the customer’s data source after their approval. Before integrating CloudBeaver, we needed to use different JDBC tools for many data sources, and it took a lot more time. Additionally, thanks to your tool, we can provide our users with limited access and no longer risk exposing credentials or sensitive information.
What are your favorite CloudBeaver features?
I like the fact that I can reconnect to my data source at any time, and all my queries will be there, so I can keep working on the fly. Also, the access control works pretty well, and we can prevent any changes by giving users read-only access to databases.

Speaking about my favorite things about CloudBeaver, I would like to mention the security part again because it suits all our needs well. For example, no credentials or other sensitive information can be seen by a user, and they can still explore all the data they need, which is great. This also provides easy administration and auditing capability.
Has the use of CloudBeaver affected the efficiency and speed of your work?
Yes, absolutely. Earlier, our developers had to manually create many scripts for each new database we connected to. Moreover, they often had to write other scripts to make an update. It’s great to have CloudBeaver and an opportunity to contact your support team when we encounter any issues. We also save time because the CloudBeaver team handles driver-related updates. All that we need is to adopt the driver and give our users the capability to start connecting without any worries.

And, of course, it is important to mention that it’s definitely more efficient to use a GUI-based tool than to do all the work manually.
What would you like to see improved in our app?
We have some data sources to which we would like to give users only temporary access and restrict their maximum time or number of requests. We’ll also be glad to have more replication-related information for some databases so that we can look at the bin logs.
Key takeaways from Fivetran’s experience with CloudBeaver

CloudBeaver provides users with built-in drivers for a large number of databases and simplifies the process of sharing resources with teammates. Fivetran’s success story demonstrates how our web-based tool can help companies with strong security requirements prevent data leaks, and at the same time increase efficiency and cost savings.
